Kerala Police on Monday registered a case in connection with an anonymous email threatening to bomb INS Vikrant, the indigenous aircraft carrier under construction in Kochi.

Ernakulam South Police confirmed that a case has been registered under IT-Act 385.

The Cochin Shipyard received an anonymous email two weeks ago threatening to blow up INS Vikrant with a bomb.

Apart from Ernakulam South Police, various central agencies have started the preliminary investigation and also probing whether there is a terrorism angle to the matter.

It should be noted that back in July this year, Eid Gul, an Afghan national, was apprehended for working at the Cochin Shipyard even after his visa had expired. He was arrested from Kolkata, where he had gone into hiding.

The INS Vikrant, the first aircraft carrier to be built in India, is in the final stages. The sea trials were done last month, 12 years after the keel was laid - in February 2009.

The total cost of the project was approximately Rs 23,000 crore at the time of the first sea trials.
