SEBEX 2: India’s latest non-nuclear explosive weapon is twice as dangerous as TNT

Certified by the Indian Navy, SEBEX 2 boasts a TNT equivalence of 2.01, making it one of the most potent non-nuclear explosives globally

India has achieved a significant milestone in military technology through the development and certification of SEBEX 2, an advanced explosive formulation. Certified by the Indian Navy, SEBEX 2 boasts a TNT equivalence of 2.01, making it one of the most potent non-nuclear explosives globally. Its purpose is to revolutionize various munitions without compromising weight.

Enhancing Military Capabilities: SEBEX 2, developed by Economic Explosives Limited (EEL) under the Make in India initiative, utilizes a high-melting explosive (HMX) composition. This formulation significantly enhances the lethality of warheads, aerial bombs, artillery shells, and other munitions. The Navy evaluated, tested, and certified SEBEX 2 under its Defence Export Promotion Scheme. Officials believe that this explosive’s development will enhance the potency and efficiency of weapons and ammunition currently in use.

Certifications and Future Developments of SEBEX 2

SEBEX 2 has undergone rigorous testing and certification, with final approvals recently completed. Economic Explosives Limited is also working on another variant with a TNT equivalence of 2.3, expected to be ready within six months. This ongoing research and development demonstrate India’s commitment to advancing military technology.

SEBEX 2

In addition to SEBEX 2, the Indian Navy has certified other explosives:

  • SITBEX 1: A thermobaric explosive known for its extended blast duration and intense heat generation. It is highly effective in demolishing enemy bunkers, tunnels, and fortified positions.
  • SIMEX 4: An insensitive munition designed for safety during storage, transport, and operation.

The Indian Navy described it as yet another stride towards reaching ‘Aatma Nirbharta’ in defence.

“#IndianNavy has successfully conducted certification tests for the explosives, which are being indigenously developed by M/s Economic Explosives Limited, Nagpur,” the Indian Navy confirmed on Twitter.

“The development of these explosives by M/s EEL is aimed to enhance potency & efficiency of weapons/ammunition,” according to the statement.

The performance of SEBEX 2, along with the advancements in SITBEX 1 and SIMEX 4, showcases India’s increasing eminence in the sphere of military technology innovation. These progressions not only fortify national defense capabilities but also position India as a potential exporter of advanced explosive technologies. Authorities recognize that these new formulations bear the potential to significantly empower India’s armed forces and exert a substantial influence on global security endeavors.

SEBEX 2 signifies a pivotal progression in India’s military technology landscape, augmenting the country’s defense capabilities and fostering opportunities for strategic alliances in global security. With ongoing developments and certifications, India is poised to assume a pivotal role in influencing the future of military explosives.
