The Ministry of Defence (MoD) is set to approve a major order worth ₹70,000 crore for next-generation Project-17B class stealth frigates. These new warships will follow the Nilgiri class frigates, also known as Project-17A class frigates, which are currently under construction.
The Indian Navy has already ordered seven Nilgiri class frigates, which are being built by two state-run shipyards, Mazagon Dockyards Limited (MDL) in Mumbai and Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata. MDL is constructing four of these frigates, while GRSE is building the remaining three.
The new Project-17B class frigates, valued at around ₹70,000 crore, are expected to enhance the stealth capabilities of the Indian Navy. Both MDL and GRSE are competing for this order. Like the Nilgiri class order, this new order might be split between the two shipyards.
Advanced Systems Integrated into Project-17B Class Frigates
The Project-17B frigates will feature advanced indigenous systems, including the BrahMos and Nirbhay cruise missiles, electronic warfare systems, anti-torpedo systems, and fire control systems. MDL is also working on Project-15B Visakhapatnam class destroyers and three follow-on Scorpene class submarines. GRSE is constructing anti-submarine corvettes and offshore patrol vessels for the Navy.
The addition of the Project-17B class frigates will significantly bolster the Indian Navy’s deterrent capabilities against potential threats from Pakistan and China.
