960 jawans will be deployed to counter terrorism in border territories of J&K

The jawans will be under strict restrictions and can be used for no other job but the counter terrorism that they are set on, as their local ties can help gather more exclusive intel

960 jawans who passed out from the Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP) Training School recently have been sent to the border districts in the territories of J&K to work on anti-infiltration and anti-terrorism fronts in a new and innovative model.

What’s so innovative about this move?

First of all, these soldiers will work on only anti-infiltration and anti-terrorism fronts. They will not be deployed for any other work or be in the office for any other extra work. According to RR Swain, J&K Director General of Police (DGP), they will be strict restrictions in place for them.

“Their supervisory officers too have been strictly instructed that they cannot be shifted to other jobs than their original anti-infiltration and anti-terrorism work. You will deploy them only on anti-infiltration and anti-terrorism work so that the general area security gets enhanced, and it becomes extremely difficult for the adversary to infiltrate and spread terror,” DGP Swain said.

Secondly, these forces will be selected based on where they’re from. Meaning, those deployed to the specific border fronts to counter terrorism will most definitely belong to those areas. Selections will even take care that no other districts are assigned to those areas, not even if they’re districts from J&K itself—only from those towns that require attention in terms of anti-terror movements.

The idea behind this is that these young people from those border territories will know how to navigate these terrains the best and be able to gather intel that those on the outside cannot. They would also understand enemy objectives and how these areas are infiltrated better than someone who may not be able to distinguish the norms in these localities.

“They are our own boys and they are not from places from outside Jammu and Kashmir – not even from other districts of J&K but from the respective border tehsils only,” Swain said.

Locally found but exclusively trained personnel will aid in being able to detect unusual movement in these border territories.

This move comes after a spike in terrorism and terror-fuelled activities across the union territories. In Reasi district, a bus carrying pilgrims veered into a deep gorge after terrorists attacked it. Ten people were killed, and 33 others were injured. In Doda district, three terrorists were hunted down and killed after they attacked a joint police and army check post.

Many are speculating on the similarities between this and the US Marines a branch of the Armed Forces of the Unites States responsible for conducting expeditionary and amphibious operations. They’re exclusive and a dedicated tasked force—and considered the strongest in the world by many.

In that vein, this is the first ever force in J&K police whose personnel cannot be interchanged for any other duties.
