Lawrence Bishnoi is a name widely associated with crime and is in the news currently due the his involvement in the murder of Baba Siddique. His gang claimed responsibility for the murder of former Maharashtra minister and NCP leader Baba Siddique, prompting the Mumbai Police to investigate his possible involvement.

Moreover, three people detained in connection with the case have claimed to be members of his gang, and a social media post claiming ownership of the murder was posted from an account supposedly associated with the gang. The legitimacy of the post and its relationship to Lawrence Bishnoi are currently being confirmed by the police.

He was also mentioned concerning the April shooting incident outside Salman Khan's house. The Mumbai Police then filed numerous court requests to obtain his custody, all of which were turned down.

Why is Bishnoi not in Mumbai’s custody?

Currently, he is serving jail time in Gujrat Sabarmati Central Prison, despite his alleged involvement in several high-profile murder and attempt-to-murder cases in Mumbai, the city Crime Branch has been unable to obtain his custody.

The main reason Lawrence Bishnoi is not in the custody of Mumbai police is because of a Union Home Ministry directive that prevents the gangster from being moved from Ahmedabad's Sabarmati Jail. This order, issued under Section 268(1) of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), gives the government the authority to impose restrictions on the mobility of well-known inmates when doing so could jeopardize public safety. This order was originally scheduled to expire in August 2024, however, it has now been extended.

Who runs the gang?

Due to a drug smuggling charge, Lawrence Bishnoi was transferred from Tihar Jail in Delhi to Sabarmati Jail in Ahmedabad in August 2023. Lawrence Bishnoi, who faces multiple criminal accusations, has also taken credit for the death of Punjabi artist Sidhu Moose Wala.

Even though he is behind bars, his gang is still running under the leadership of three wanted felons who live overseas: Rohit Godar, Goldie Brar, and his brother Anmol Bishnoi.

An NIA chargesheet claims that this organization has grown quickly, just like Dawood Ibrahim did when he began his criminal empire in the 1990s by committing small crimes. The comparisons are being drawn with Dawood's time.

Why is Salman Khan under threat?

According to the group's statement, they singled out Siddique because of his close ties to Bollywood actor Salman Khan, who has been threatened by the gang ever since he was found to have participated in the hunting of two blackbucks, which are significant to the Bishnoi community culturally. The statement went on to say that anyone supporting "the Dawood gang" or Salman Khan should be "prepared for consequences."

Salman Khan has been the target of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang for several years. In April of this year, shots were fired outside his Mumbai home. The group is said to have threatened Khan in writing in 2022, stating that he would suffer the same fate as Sidhu Moose Wala.

Salman Khan stopped all filming and placed his home under protection, with security personnel on duty around the clock.
