A horrific incident took place in Visakhapatnam, where a 20-year-old law student was gang-raped by her boyfriend and his three friends. The accused recorded the act and used it to blackmail the girl for months, causing immense emotional distress. The victim attempted suicide in desperation, but her father managed to save her life. Later the girl told her family about the incident and her family backed her and filed a complaint against the boys.

The four accused have been arrested under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to gangrape, voyeurism, and criminal intimidation, as well as provisions of the Information Technology Act, the Visakhapatnam city police said.

Visakhapatnam police commissioner Shanka Brata Bagchi informed, "All four accused (were) arrested and remanded. The victim's boyfriend and his three close friends are the accused."

The girl and her boyfriend had been together for over a year and also promised to marry her. On August 13th, he took her to his friend's place, where she was assaulted. His friends recorded the assault and threatened to share the video if she told anyone. They continued to abuse her, using the video as blackmail.

The harassment went on for many months. Driven to despair, the woman attempted to end her life on Monday, but her father saved her. After that, she told her family what happened. With her family's support, she went to the police and filed a complaint.

The Opposition YSR Congress Party condemned the N Chandrababu Naidu-led TDP government for this incident. The incident came to limelight when a post describing the incident went viral. The post reads, “A law student was gang-raped by four youths in Visakhapatnam. The atrocity was filmed on a cell phone and the victim was threatened many times. The victim tried to commit suicide because she could not stop the harassment of the accused. The father saved her. How many more girls should be victimised by the incompetence of the coalition government,"

The post also tagged the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, and Andhra Pradesh Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha for bringing attention to the issue.

The question of women's safety has been raised several times. Previously the Andhra Pradesh Home Minister questioned why the state has ranked high in crime for the past five years. She criticised the focus on the "Disha Act" while neglecting the existing "Nirbhaya" Act, accusing officials of misleading the public. She also mentioned that since the coalition government took office, they have swiftly handled cases, with suspects being remanded within 48 hours.
