A 33-year-old nurse in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand has allegedly become the victim of rape and murder, a case that has emerged amid the national outcry over the Kolkata rape and murder case. The tragic incident involving the Uttarakhand nurse killed occurred around two weeks ago in the Udham Singh Nagar district while she was returning from the hospital. On Wednesday, August 14, the police detained a suspect in connection with the Uttarakhand nurse killed the case.

The deceased corpse of the victim was discovered on the district's deserted plot. On July 30, she was allegedly murdered after being raped.The culprit, a daily wage worker from Bareilly named Dharmendra Kumar, has been identified.

When the victim failed to come home the next day, her sister went to the police and lodged a report. On August 8, the deceased corpse was located by the police. Media sources state that the accused raped the woman after dragging her to some woods. He then killed her by strangulation. Afterwards, he took her jewelry off of her and fled.

After locating the man from the neighboring state of Rajasthan using the victim's phone, police took him into custody.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Manjunath was quoted as saying by Indian Express, “The accused is a (drug) addict and does not know the woman. On the day of the incident, he saw the woman going alone. As per our information, he stopped the woman, who fought back fiercely. She was, however, overpowered and… strangled to death. He also sexually assaulted her. After the murder, he took the woman’s belongings and escaped.”

Later on during the interrogation, the accused admitted that he had attacked the nurse inside the Basundhara Apartment on Kashipur Road with the goal of robbing the place.

The tragedy occurs at a time when nationwide demonstrations have been sparked by the rape and murder of a junior doctor on the grounds of the RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata on August 9. The crime has rattled the nation's medical community.
