A 19-year-old boy named Ravi Sahni died, and his friend Vikas (also known as Majnu), 28, was seriously hurt after they allegedly jumped out of a moving police van in Delhi's Kapasera area on Tuesday. The police said the two were spotted behaving suspiciously during a motorcycle patrol.

“During routine motorcycle patrolling at around 3 pm, Head Constable Balbir Singh and Constable Nitesh noticed two individuals on a motorcycle behaving suspiciously. When signalled to stop, the suspects attempted to flee but were apprehended after a brief chase,” said Surender Chaudhary, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South West).

According to police, they found a country-made pistol with Vikas. The motorcycle they were riding was also reported stolen from Palam village, and Ravi Sahni was the one driving it.

A case was filed at the Kapashera Police Station under Section 25 of the Arms Act and Section 317(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), related to stolen property.

The police explained that after their arrest, both men were checked by doctors and then taken in a government vehicle to the Vasant Kunj North Police Station lock-up. But during the ride, something unexpected happened.

“Both accused were medically examined post-arrest and were being transported in a government vehicle to the police lock-up in the Vasant Kunj North Police Station,” said Chaudhary. He added, “As the vehicle slowed down on a turn near the Vasant Kunj North Police Station, the men jumped off. Both accused sustained abrasion injuries. They were immediately taken to IGI Hospital, where Ravi Sahni was declared dead,” Chaudhary said.

Vikas is still in the hospital recovering from his injuries.

After hearing about Ravi’s death, his family and locals gathered on the Kapasera-Samalka Road on Wednesday. They were angry and upset. Some of them even pelted stones during the protest, demanding answers and justice.

Police have yet to release more details as the investigation continues.
