In Nagpur, a 25-year-old engineering student, Utkarsh Dhakole, was arrested after allegedly killing his parents over a fight about his career choice.
The crime remained undiscovered for six days until a foul smell from the house led to their discovery.
According to the police, Utkarsh killed his parents, Liladhar Dhakole (55), a social worker, and Aruna Dhakole (50), a private school teacher, on December 26. The motive appears to be linked to his ongoing failure in his engineering studies, which he had been attempting to clear for the past six years. Despite repeated failures, Utkarsh was determined to continue with his engineering course, while his parents wanted him to quit and pursue a different career path.
Utkarsh allegedly strangled his mother and his father, who returned from work was stabbed to death. After committing the murders, Utkarsh left the bodies in the house, and the crime went unnoticed until December 31, when the strong odor alarmed the neighbors.
To cover his track, Utkarsh misled his younger sister by telling her their parents had gone on a meditation retreat to Bangalore, where phones were not allowed.
He took his sister to their uncle’s house, where they stayed for a few days. To further maintain the ruse, Utkarsh sent a message from his father’s phone on December 27, claiming that their parents would return by January 5.
It was only when the neighbors complained about the foul odor that the police were alerted and authorities discovered their bodies.
Police initially detained Utkarsh for questioning, during which he confessed to the crime.
Police are continuing to investigate the case, with the primary charge against Utkarsh being murder. Authorities are gathering further evidence to strengthen the case.
DCP Niketan Kadam stated that Utkarsh’s ongoing struggle with his engineering studies and his parents’ insistence that he quit had fueled the tragic events.
