A shocking triple murder in South Delhi's Neb Sarai has left the local community in shock. A 20-year-old man named Arjun was arrested for stabbing his parents and sister to death while they were sleeping. The murders happened on his parents' 27th wedding anniversary. The reason behind the killings was family problems and anger that Arjun had been feeling.
How did the crime happen?
The police found the bodies of Rajesh Kumar (51), Komal (46), and their daughter Kavita (23) in their home on Wednesday morning. Arjun, their son, called the police and his uncle to report the murders. He said he had gone for a morning walk at around 5:30 am and found the bodies when he came back.
However, CCTV footage showed that no one entered or left the house during the time of the crime. Police officer Sanjay Kumar Jain said there were no signs of forced entry, stealing, or anything being messed up, which made them suspicious. After talking to Arjun, they noticed that his story didn’t add up, so they took him into custody. After questioning him further, Arjun admitted to the murders.
Reason behind the murders
Arjun told the police that he had been planning the murders for some time because he was angry at his family. His father, Rajesh, was a former soldier who often scolded Arjun about his studies and household work. Arjun felt embarrassed because his father had recently yelled at him and even hit him in front of their neighbours.
Arjun also felt ignored by his family and thought that no one was on his side. His anger grew even stronger when he found out that his father planned to leave the family property to his sister.
"He premeditated the plan to eliminate his family members. He chose December 4 since it was the marriage anniversary of his parents. To create a web of deception, he went out at 5:30 am to have an alibi," the Delhi Police said in a statement.
Who were the victims?
The family was originally from Haryana but moved to Delhi 15 years ago to give their children better opportunities. Rajesh Kumar was a caring father; Komal was friendly and kind; and Kavita was known for being happy and cheerful.
Neighbours are struggling to process the tragedy. "Yesterday, I saw the mother and daughter on their terrace, talking and laughing. Today, they're no longer alive. Crime has become so common, but experiencing it firsthand has completely shaken me," said a neighbour, Himani.
Another neighbour, Anjali, shared, "The mother-daughter duo were approachable and kind to everyone in the colony. It's unimaginable that something so tragic could happen to them."
Arjun's background
Arjun is a second-year Bachelor of Arts student at Delhi University. He studied at Army Public School in Dhaula Kuan and is also a trained boxer, having represented Delhi in a boxing event where he won a silver medal. Despite these achievements, he reportedly struggled with feelings of neglect and isolation.
CM Atishi criticised central
The brutal murders have shocked and upset many people. Delhi's Chief Minister Atishi criticised the central government, which is responsible for the Delhi Police, saying they failed to keep the city safe.
“There was a triple murder in Neb Sarai this morning. Murders are happening in broad daylight in Delhi, bullets are being fired, and drugs are being sold openly. The central government has only one responsibility in Delhi—to provide security to the people of Delhi. They have completely failed in their responsibility," she said on X.
Former Chief Minister and AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal also commented on the incident, linking it to a broader collapse of law and order in the capital. "Three murders in the same house in Neb Sarai... This is extremely painful and frightening. Every day, Delhiites wake up to such frightening news. Criminals have been given a free hand, and law and order have collapsed. Homes are being destroyed; innocent lives are being lost. And those who are responsible are silently watching all this happen," he posted on X.
