A shooting incident was reported at the Tis Hazari Court today afternoon at 1:35PM after an argument between two groups of lawyers. No injuries have been reported yet.

The incident took place under the Subzi Mandi police station jurisdiction. According to the police, the incident happened after an argument broke out between lawyers and a firearm was discharged in the air. The situation is now normal and legal action will be initiated.

Sagar Singh Kalsi, deputy commissioner of police (DCP) (north), said that the police team which reached the spot learnt that it was a confrontation between two groups of lawyers, including their office bearers.

“A firing incident took place around 1.35pm on Wednesday in Tis Hazari court. When police reached the spot, it was learned that two different groups of lawyers, including office bearers, had allegedly shot in the air and no one was injured,” the DCP said. However, it is still not clear how many rounds were actually fired.

A purported video, shot possibly on a mobile phone, was also circulated on social media soon after the incident, showing a man in a lawyer’s attire using a gun to fire in the air while a couple of similarly dressed men appeared to pelt stones.

Bar Council of Delhi Chairman KK Manan condemned the incident of firing saying, "Detailed inquiry into the matter will be undertaken. It will be inquired if the weapons were licensed or not. Even if the weapons were licensed, no lawyer or anyone else can use them like this inside or around court premises."

This is not the first incident of shootings in a court premises. There have been multiple shootings and even police shootouts in the Tis Hazari Court premise in the past. In April 2023, a man shot a woman in the Saket court complex in Delhi as a fallout of a personal enmity.

"In any city, a court complex is one of the most secured areas. Policemen and women, PCR vans and metal detectors and scanners are there. Despite such high security, a woman was shot at," AAP leader and Delhi minister Atishi had said.
