In a shocking incident in Delhi, a 30-year-old woman from Darjeeling, who had recently moved to the capital in search of employment, was allegedly raped multiple times by a man she met online. The accused, identified as 28-year-old Paras Shahi, reportedly assaulted the victim, pouring hot lentils on her, when confronted about marriage. The harrowing incident took place at the accused's flat in Neb Sarai, south Delhi, where the victim had been living with her two-year-old daughter.
The victim, who had separated from her husband a few years ago, connected with Paras six months ago on a social media platform. Paras, a chef at a local restaurant, allegedly offered assistance to help her settle in Delhi. However, the situation took a dark turn as he began exploiting the woman, promising her a job as a caretaker or cook, and subsequently subjecting her to sexual assault.
The police reported that the woman suffered burn injuries on her face and neck, as well as other injuries on her limbs and back during the brutal assault. She was admitted to Safdarjung Hospital for medical treatment.
Deputy Commissioner Of Police (South) Ankit Chauhan addressed the media, stating, "We took prompt action and arrested the accused. The two knew each other for 5-6 months. We are investigating the matter." The police revealed that the victim and the accused had been acquainted for several months, with the woman moving to Delhi around January 15 to live at Paras Shahi's Neb Sarai flat.
The accused's promises of assistance turned into a nightmare for the victim, as he allegedly raped her under the false pretense of marriage. The situation escalated on February 1, when the woman confronted Paras about their relationship. In response, he attacked her with kitchen utensils and subjected her to further torture by pouring hot lentils on her. Shockingly, the victim's two-year-old daughter witnessed the gruesome act.
A senior police officer provided additional details, stating, "As the woman started screaming for help, the accused picked up a metal pot with daal in it and poured it on her. The accused again hit her and locked her in the room." The woman and her child were reportedly confined in the room for five hours until she managed to contact the landlord for help.
The landlord arrived at the scene, assisting the victim and her daughter to safety. Subsequently, based on the woman's complaint, the police filed a First Information Report (FIR) against Paras Shahi under sections of assault and rape at the Neb Sarai police station.
The incident has sparked outrage, highlighting the vulnerabilities faced by individuals, especially women, in unfamiliar environments. Authorities are actively investigating the case, emphasizing the need for stringent measures to ensure the safety of those who migrate for better opportunities. The arrest of the accused provides a glimpse of hope for justice, but it also underscores the importance of addressing the underlying issues contributing to such heinous crimes in society.
