Goyal, who had just obtained Canadian Permanent Resident (PR) status, was discovered dead by police at 8:46 in the morning after they responded to a report of gunfire in the 900 block of 164 Street. The victim was a member of the community with no prior interactions with the authorities, and He had no known criminal background.

The four suspects, who are all from Surrey, Manvir Basram (23), Sahib Basra (20), Harkirat Jhutty (23), and Keilon Francois (20) from Ontario have been identified by the police. Shortly after the incident, they were taken into custody and accused of first-degree murder.

Although the reason for the murder is still being looked into, preliminary evidence points to a targeted shooting. Goyal was a 28-year-old community member who had no prior involvement with the police. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) is investigating his death to find out why he was murdered.

Goyal's sister, Charu Singhla, stated that his family was unaware of the reason behind his death and that there was no evidence linking him to organized crime. Before being shot, Goyal was speaking on the phone with his mother, who resides in India, according to his brother-in-law Bawandeep. He was getting out of his car after returning from his usual workout when he was shot.

The police have asked anybody who has dash-camera footage of drivers in the vicinity or information regarding the incident to come forward and get in touch with them. Given the current political tensions between India and Canada, the case has raised questions over the safety of people of Indian origin living in Canada.

In June 2023, a Canadian citizen of Indian origin named Hardeep Singh Nijjar was killed in Surrey, British Columbia. His designation as a "terrorist" dates back three years to India. A Sikh man of Indian origin and his 11-year-old son were shot and killed in November 2023 in Nova Scotia, in what the police described as a "sick and twisted" gang violence episode. April 2024 saw a shooting in south Edmonton, Canada that claimed the lives of 2 persons, one of which was a man of Indian origin.
