Disturbing Revelations: CBI probes hospital cover-up in Kolkata doctor rape and murder

Reports indicate that the hospital's administration, allegedly attempted to assert that the death was a suicide rather than a homicide.

The ongoing inquiry into the tragic rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata has uncovered disturbing information regarding the hospital’s efforts in the Cover-Up in Kolkata Doctor case to mislead the victim’s family. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is currently examining both the murder case and the allegations of corruption associated with the hospital’s management.

On August 9, 2024, the body of a postgraduate trainee doctor was found at R.G. Kar Hospital, igniting widespread outrage and protests throughout the state. Initial reports suggested that the hospital attempted to classify the death as a suicide, a characterization that has been vehemently disputed by the victim’s family and the public. This misrepresentation has raised significant concerns about the integrity of the hospital’s administration and its management of the case.

Public Outrage and Protests Erupt Across Kolkata

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has assumed control of the inquiry following directives from the Calcutta High Court. The agency is examining the conditions surrounding the physician’s demise, particularly investigating the possibility of foul play. Key individuals linked to the hospital are being interrogated, including Sandip Ghosh, the former principal, who has undergone questioning for more than 130 hours over 13 consecutive days. Ghosh, along with other hospital officials, is also under scrutiny for purported financial misconduct during his time in office, as highlighted by a separate First Information Report (FIR) lodged by the CBI.

Reports indicate that the hospital’s administration, particularly during Ghosh’s tenure, allegedly attempted to mislead the victim’s family by asserting that the death was a suicide rather than a homicide. This assertion has been strongly refuted by the family, who are seeking justice and accountability from both the hospital and the relevant law enforcement agencies. The CBI’s investigation is focused on revealing the truth behind these misleading assertions and assessing whether there was an intentional effort to obscure the facts surrounding the physician’s death.

The incident has sparked considerable public distress, resulting in protests from healthcare professionals and students throughout Kolkata and beyond. Protesters are advocating for justice for the victim and are calling for reforms aimed at enhancing the safety of women within the medical profession. The Indian Medical Association has responded decisively by suspending Ghosh’s membership due to the allegations made against him. Demonstrations have been organized in multiple locations, with participants highlighting the urgent need for systemic reforms to safeguard female healthcare workers from violence and harassment.

As the investigation unfolds, the CBI has executed searches at Ghosh’s home and is actively questioning other individuals connected to the case. A civic volunteer, Sanjoy Roy, has been apprehended concerning the murder, and both he and Ghosh have participated in polygraph examinations as part of the investigation. Additionally, the CBI is collaborating with the Enforcement Directorate, which has launched a separate inquiry into financial misconduct at the hospital.
