As per government records, the state of Gujarat has witnessed a fairly consistent rise in crimes against women and children in the past five years with the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) receiving 2,294 complaints and the National Commission for Women (NCW) registering 2,271 cases during the said period. This information came to light after the Ministry of Woman and Child Development released the data in response to a question in the Rajya Sabha on December 6, 2023.

While there was a massive drop in complaints (42) received by NCPCR during the year 2020-21, the total of 2,294 cases received between 2018-19 to 2022-23 indicated a five-fold increase in child abuse cases during this time. The highest number of cases was received in 2019-20 with the NCPCR receiving 1,478 cases in that year. Meanwhile, the NCPCR received 77 cases in 2018-19, 279 cases in 2021-22 and 418 cases in 2022-23.

Gujarat crime

While, the NCPCR took cognizance of 81 cases in 2018-19, 1478 cases in 2019-20, 42 cases in 2020-21, 279 cases in 2021-22, and 418 cases in 2022-23, of the complaints received, they also took suo-motu action or cognizance in 12 cases in 2018-19, 16 cases in 2019-20, 2 cases in 2020-21, 6 cases in 2021-22, and 2 cases in 2022-23.

According to the data provided in the Upper House, the NCW in Gujarat registered 247 cases of atrocities on women in 2018, 298 cases in 2019, 393 cases in 2020, 458 cases in 2021, 415 cases in 2022 and 460 cases in 2023 until the 30th of November, taking the total to 2,271 complaints indicating a twofold increase in violence. Out of the complaints registered by NCW, action was taken in 158 cases in 2018, 327 cases in 2019, 226 cases in 2020, 284 cases in 2021, 260 cases in 2022 and 224 cases in 2023.
