According to the latest data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), the national capital noted a significant increase in cybercrime incidents in 2022.
The incidents almost doubled in comparison to the previous year, with 685 cases reported in 2022, up from 345 in 2021. To give you a wider perspective, the count stood noticeably lower at 166 cases in 2020, as evidenced in the comprehensive crime data for 2022. A senior official from Delhi Police stated, "Our continuous efforts in fostering cyber awareness are reflected through various ongoing campaigns."
The same data from the NCRB revealed that crimes against women in India saw a rise of 4% in 2022, amounting to 445,256 cases. This is a significant increase from 428,278 cases in 2021. Particularly in metropolitan cities with populations exceeding two million, these crime rates shot up by 12.3% to 48,755 incidents in 2022.
Among the Union Territories, Delhi reported the highest number of crimes against women at 14,247, minimally down from 14,277 in 2021 but still higher than the 10,093 cases in 2020. Delta City topped the list among metropolitan areas, with the highest number of crimes against women at 14,158, significantly more than Mumbai’s 6,176 cases and Bengaluru’s 3,924 cases.
Curiously, the report indicated Jaipur as having the highest rate of total crimes against women per 100,000 women among all metro cities. The figures are as follows:
- Jaipur - 239.3 cases
- Delhi - 186.9 cases
- Indore - 174.3 cases
The capital city also saw a shocking case in 2022, in east Delhi's Kasturba Nagar, where a woman was reportedly kidnapped, gang-raped, and marched around the streets by her attackers. This violent incident, along with many others, highlighted the vulnerability of women in the national capital.
Further analysis of the NCRB data shows that Delhi saw 1,204 rape incidents and 129 dowry-related deaths in 2022. It also saw sixteen murders as a result of dubious love relationships.
Delhi also marked a tragic record in the country's road casualties in 2022. It recorded the highest number of road accident deaths with 2,103 individuals losing their lives.
Continuing with this, the NCRB explained the main reasons for accidental deaths:
Road accidents accounted for 97.3 percent of all accidents. Most of these incidents happened near residential areas (29.1%), followed by industrial areas (9.7%), and regions surrounding educational institutions such as schools and colleges (8.7%).
Delhi also led the cities with the highest number of railway accidents, scraping 50.9% of total accidents in 2022.
