The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has detained four people connected to a network that allegedly trafficked Indian citizens to Russia under the pretense of offering them lucrative job opportunities as part of a major crackdown on human trafficking. The investigation, which started in March 2024, turned out evidence of a troubling scheme in which numbers of Indians were tricked into believing they would be offered well-paying jobs in Russia. Rather, they were forced into combat duties in the continuing war between Russia and Ukraine.
Two important suspects, Arun and Yesudas Junior, both from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, were recently arrested by the CBI. These arrests come after Nijil Jobi Bensam from Kanyakumari and Anthony Michael Elangovan from Mumbai were taken into custody on April 24. Elangovan, who helped with travel planning and visa processing, and Bensam, a contract translator for the Russian Defense Ministry, are said to be key players in the trafficking scheme. Agents used social media channels to find victims as part of a network that stretched throughout India.
Many times, victims were tricked into thinking they were going to Russia for civilian employment or educational prospects. But when they got there, their passports were taken away, and some of them were made to serve in the military, which left them seriously injured. A case has been brought by the CBI against private visa consulting firms and the agents that were part of this unlawful scheme. The agency is trying to take down the entire network, and raids have been carried out in seven different cities. The investigation is still ongoing.
The larger problem of human trafficking and the exploitation of weak people in conflict areas has been made clearer by this example. It emphasizes how crucial it is for nations to work together to stop these kinds of international crimes. Many victims have been impacted by the human trafficking network associated with the transfer of Indian nationals to fight in Russia during the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The CBI has discovered 35 cases where people were abducted to Russia after being seduced by deceptive claims of well-paying employment. It was also discovered that up to 180 individuals, the majority of whom were brought to Russia on student visas, had been dispatched by a single Delhi-based organization.
