At Chennai Airport an Air India cabin crew member was arrested for allegedly aiding a passenger in smuggling 1.7 kg of 24-carat gold. The arrest took place on Sunday after both individuals arrived on an Air India flight from Dubai.
The authorities revealed that during the flight, the passenger had handed over the gold to the cabin crew member. A tip-off led customs officials to intercept them when they arrived in Chennai. On further search, gold in compound form was found hidden inside the undergarments of the cabin crew member.
"A search resulted in the recovery of gold in compound form, concealed in the undergarments of the cabin crew," the customs department stated.
Both have been sent to judicial custody. Air India has not made any official statement on the issue so far.
Another major bust: Cocaine worth ₹ 14.2 crore seized
Customs officials at Chennai Airport have arrested a Kenyan woman for smuggling cocaine worth a whopping ₹ 14.2 crore. The woman had arrived from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on December 7.
The customs department has confirmed that the female passenger was intercepted on specific intelligence. Upon medical examination, she ejected 90 cylindrical capsules of cocaine.
"Based on specific intelligence, a Kenyan female passenger who arrived in Chennai from Addis Ababa by Ethiopian Airlines on December 7 was intercepted by the Air Intelligence Unit. On search of her person, she egested 90 cylindrical hyperdense objects with medical assistance," officials said.
The recovered substance weighs 1.4 kg which tested positive for cocaine, a psychotropic substance under the NDPS Act of 1985. The woman has been put behind judicial custody.
