The immediate alarm raised by the shepherd led to the involvement of local authorities. “A shepherd heard her cries on Saturday evening in Sonurli village and alerted the police after finding her chained and in distress,” an official reported.

Lalita Kayi was found in a weakened state, having endured severe exposure to the elements and a lack of food. The police were unable to ascertain the exact duration of her captivity due to her deteriorated condition. “The woman is not in a position to give her statement. She is weak as she has not eaten anything for a couple of days and also due to the heavy rains in the area. We do not know how long she had been tied to that tree,” the police official explained.

Following her rescue, Lalita Kayi was initially taken to a hospital in Sawantwadi, located in Maharashtra’s Konkan region. From there, she was transferred to Oros in Sindhudurg for further treatment. Due to her serious condition, she was subsequently moved to Goa Medical College. “The woman was taken to a hospital in Sawantwadi and then to Oros in Sindhudurg. Given her mental and physical health, she was moved to Goa Medical College for further treatment. She is now out of danger. Doctors treating her have noted that she suffers from psychiatric issues. We have found medical prescriptions in her possession,” an official stated.

This raises questions about her legal status and background. “We found her Aadhaar card with a Tamil Nadu address and a photocopy of her United States passport. She has been identified as Lalita Kayi, but her visa has expired. We are currently verifying these documents to confirm her nationality. The police are also in touch with the Foreigners Regional Registration office,” the official said.
