Soon after the Denver Nuggets got their first NBA title, a mass shooting took place near Ball Arena in downtown Denver in which 9 people were shot, police said, as people had gathered in downtown Denver to celebrate the Nuggets’ win.
Shots were fired during an altercation involving several people, police said, hours after the Nuggets defeated the Miami Heat at the Ball Arena less than a mile away.
Of nine people shot, three are in critical condition, and the rest are believed to have non-life-threatening injuries, police said. Officers took into custody a suspect who also had been shot, police said.
Police are not yet said whether the shootings are connected to the celebrations.
Police spokesperson Doug Schepman told CBS News the shooting happened roughly three-and-a-half hours after the game, in the area where the biggest crowd of fans had gathered, though there was a smaller crowd when the gunfire broke out.
The suspect was identified fairly quickly and taken into custody without incident, Schepman said.
The investigation was continuing, he said.
