Two young sports trainees were found hanging inside a room at a Sports Authority of India (SAI) hostel in Kollam on Thursday, police said.
The incident came to light early in the morning when other hostel residents noticed that the girls did not turn up for their daily training session.
Police said the victims were aged 17 and 15. The older girl was from Kozhikode, while the younger one was a resident of Thiruvananthapuram.
The 17-year-old was an athletics trainee studying in Plus Two, and the 15-year-old was a kabaddi player and a Class 10 student.
The girls were discovered around 5 am after fellow trainees became concerned when they failed to report for morning practice. When repeated knocks on the door received no response, hostel authorities broke open the door.
Police said both girls were found hanging inside the room.
The younger girl was officially staying in another room but had spent Wednesday night in the older trainee’s room. According to police, both were seen by other hostel inmates earlier in the morning.
Police have taken note of the incident, and further procedures are underway. No official statement on the cause of death has been issued so far.
Authorities said more details would be shared after completing formal inquiries.
