A source from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) reported on Friday that an air hostess named Surabhi Khatun was arrested at Kannur Airport in Kerala for allegedly smuggling gold.
A source informed PTI that a personal search of Surabhi Khatun led to the recovery of 1 kg of gold concealed in compound form, hidden in her rectum.
According to the source, this is the first instance in India where an airline crew member has been caught smuggling gold by hiding it in her rectum.
Surabhi Khatun, working for Air India Express, was a cabin crew member on the flight that arrived in Kannur from Muscat on May 28.
DRI officials seized the gold at Kannur Airport. Following her arrest, she was brought before a magistrate and remanded to 14 days in custody.
An in-depth investigation has been initiated, and the current evidence indicates that Surabhi Khatun had engaged in gold smuggling multiple times before.
Authorities are also looking into the possible involvement of individuals from Kerala in the smuggling operation.
Additionally, attempts to obtain a response from the airline representative regarding this matter have been made, but no response has been received thus far.
