Coronil – an Ayurvedic drug developed by Baba Ramdev’s Patanjali has now been cleared by the Ministry of Ayush as a “supporting measure for COVID-19” and has received the Certificate of Pharmaceutical Product as per the WHO certification scheme.
The approval comes after Patanjali Ayurveda presented scientific research papers based on international parameters showcasing Coronil as the ‘first evidence-based drug against COVID-19’. Nine of the presented research papers have been published in international journals, while fifteen others are in the pipeline.
Baba Ramdev asserted that Coronil is just one step further towards establishing Yoga and Ayurveda as a global solution against diseases. He also said that the medicine could provide 100% recovery from COVID-19 within 3-7 days.
Coronil was first launched by Baba Ramdev’s Patanjali in June 2020 as an Ayurvedic cure from the Coronavirus disease. However, after falling into controversy over its claims the medicine was later labeled as an ‘immunity booster’.
In an event attended by Union Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev said that they are proud to announce the first Ayurvedic, clinically controlled trial-based evidence and research-based medicine prepared by the combined efforts of Patanjali Research Centre and NIMS.
Harsh Vardhan said that people's faith in Ayurveda had increased and all forms of medicines should work in harmony to boost the healthcare system.
Anurag Varshney, Head of Patanjali Research Institute while elaborating on the clinical trials, said, “We tested 100 patients administering half of them with Coronil Tablet. Those who got the medicine turned COVID-19 positive to negative in seven days. So, it is a well-defined in-built efficacy”. He also added that the trials have been recorded by the WHO on its international registry.
Notably, it is very hard for Ayurvedic drugs to receive CoPP approval. After its scientific validation, Coronil Tablets can now be exported to 158 countries. This adds Coronil to the list of indigenous solutions provided by India to the world amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
