On National Pet Day (April 11th), online food delivery platform, Swiggy announced a new 'Paw-ternity Policy' for its employees who might be pet parents to avail them of leave to take care of their pets. Swiggy devised and designed the policy in a manner of providing support to employees who are pet parents. "We understand that parenthood comes in various forms," Swiggy said in a statement. On Thursday, they announced their support for employees on pet care and adoption under the policy.

Girish Menon, Chief Human Resource Officer, Swiggy said, "Building on our gender-neutral parental policy introduced in 2020, which provides substantial paid leave for primary and secondary caregivers, in addition to bonding leaves, and time off for adoption, surrogacy, miscarriage and IVF, we are now expanding our definition of parenthood to include pet parents as well. And that's why, starting today, we're announcing the Swiggy Paw-ternity Policy for all full-time employees".

As per the Paw-ternity Policy, employees will also receive an extra paid day off on top of their regular leaves on the day they bring their new pets home to aid in their adjustment. Additionally, it would provide pet owners the option to choose to work from home throughout the settlement phase. Pet parents can also use their casual and sick leaves to attend to the pets, which can be applied for vaccinations, veterinary appointments, or to take care of sick and injured pets generally.

"Whether it's for a routine vaccination or accompanying a sick or injured pet to a veterinary appointment, the policy allows employees to take the time off they need to care for their pets," Menon said.

The company's bereavement Paw-ternity policy would also cover pets, which will provide time for the employee to grieve and recover from the loss of their pets. "We recognize the indispensable place pets hold in the love of our employees and are dedicated to supporting them in every aspect of their journey with Swiggy's pet care policy," wrote the company.
