Shaadi.com’s dowry calculator shocks users

Once you click on the calculate dowry button, you are redirected to a page that reads "91202 dowry deaths were reported in India between 2001-2012. Do you still want to know?"

Shaadi.com’s dowry calculator has recently grabbed eyeballs for their surprising feature that lets users know their “Dowry Worth”.

It asks users to fill in details like their age, salary, education, location and whether they own a car/house.

Once done and clicked on the “Calculate dowry” button, it redirects to a new page that reads “91202 dowry deaths were reported in India between 2001-2012. Do you still want to know ?” It furthers says “Is her life worth the price? Let’s make India a dowry-free society. Be the change. Make a difference.”

An X (Twitter) user “The Cancer Doctor” wrote: “Initially was shocked to see Dowry calculator in Shaadi.com. A segment of the site shows users how much they are worth in the ‘dowry’ stakes. When you enter your details like educational qualification and income, you are in for a surprise.”

He further added, “Instead of showing their dowry worth, the ‘calculator’ shows the visitor stats about dowry deaths in India. Respect and wonderful idea”

His post caught attention quickly and collected over 2 Lakh views on the microblogging platform.

Users commended this idea and left witty comments

One user wrote, “Deserves an award!” Another said, “This ended up better than I imagined.”

A third user wrote, “How much dowry are you worth?’ is probably translating ‘Mandi mein bhaw kitna hai’ into English.”

A post read, “Kudos it will also be interesting to know the stats regarding how many ppl check this feature out!”. Another user added, “This is great. Also, every profile that tries to use this feature must come with a tag that you can’t remove.”

This initiative is getting widespread appreciation, as Dowry still remains a significant evil practice in our society. Dowry leads to domestic violence and builds undue pressure on the bride and her family.

Although the country has some strict laws restricting Dowry, however, it appears they have not provided a comprehensive solution to this problem.
