The Adani group has started two defence facilities in North India this week at an investment of around Rs 3,000 crores which is in tune with the ongoing Atmanirbhar Bharat. This facility, built by Adani defence and aerospace at Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur is of a staggering 500 acres and will manufacture small, medium and large caliber ammunitions for the armed force, paramilitary and police.

According to Karan Adani, founder's son who's overseeing the fledgling defense business, the factories will produce 150 million rounds of ammunition annually which is roughly a quarter of India's requirements and will cater to the diverse needs of the Indian Armed Forces.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has of late encouraged indigenous firms to start and boost the manufacturing sector and reduce their reliance on imports from other countries, creating business prospects worth billions of dollars for the country and its conglomerates.

Karan Adani said that the country’s dependence on foreign imports for its military needs has not only constrained the country's strategic autonomy but also limited its economic potential.

Furthermore, the manufacturing facility is expected to create over 4,000 jobs and aims to produce 200,000 rounds of large-caliber artillery and tank ammunition annually by 2025. It also aims at manufacturing 5 million pounds of medium caliber ammunition a year later and also be capable of producing short-range and long-range missiles.

According to the company’s website, Adani Defence already manufactures drones, anti-drone systems and small arms including light machine guns, assault rifles and pistols.
