A surgeon performed a vasectomy on himself and shared a video of the entire procedure on social media. The video, which he claimed was for educational purposes, quickly went viral.
What is a vasectomy?
A vasectomy is a form of male birth control that cuts the supply of sperm to your semen. It's done by cutting and sealing the tubes that carry sperm. Vasectomy has a low risk of problems and can usually be performed in an outpatient setting under local anaesthesia.
Why did the surgeon do it?
The surgeon, Chen Wei-nong, decided to perform the surgery on himself to reduce the risk of a mistake. His wife didn’t want to have any more children, and he chose to undergo the vasectomy as a "gift" for her, reported MS News.
The surgery and video details
Chen Wei-nong started the surgery after receiving local anaesthesia. Since he was performing the procedure on himself, what normally takes 15 minutes took an hour. He posted the video on Instagram, where it got around 2 million views and almost 61,000 likes. Many people were shocked by the surgery.
While performing the surgery, Chen explained the process to viewers. He said, “It is really painful when you touch the vas deferens, and it feels strange to sew yourself up,” according to MS News. At the end of the video, Chen shared that he felt fine the next morning.
Netizens react to the risky procedure
After the video went viral, many users shared their thoughts online. Some were concerned for the doctor’s safety, while others were shocked by the risks he took. One user commented, “Doctors believe in the patient’s technique." Another said, "Why do this? Isn’t it better to have other doctors perform it?”
Another user wrote in Chinese (traditional), “The doctor’s description makes me feel a little sour below. It is too scary. The psychological pressure is so big."
