Varun Vummadi, the CEO of a company based in San Francisco and an IIT alumnus, has openly criticised the work ethic of Indian software engineers. In a post on X, he shared his experience of hiring engineers for his company's Indian office and the challenges he faces with their work habits.
Even offering high salaries, Vummadi claims many engineers are unwilling to work hard. "Even with a base salary of Rs 1 crore, many are unwilling to work hard. A significant number of engineers with 3-8 years of experience are reluctant to work six days a week," he wrote on X.

Vummadi's post gained a lot of attention, receiving over 369,000 views. Many people shared their thoughts in the comments, expressing a similar concern about the balance between work and life. One user stated, "Be it any field, the days of 'pay high salary and make them work 24x7' are gone, in my opinion. A five-day work week and eight hours per day are conducive to mental and physical health. And also productivity."
Another user agreed, saying, "Offer them five days a week and Rs 75 lakh. I am glad some people are prioritising mental health and family over money."
The comments show that the idea of work-life balance is becoming more important to professionals across various fields, not just engineers.
Balancing work life and personal life is not always easy. When we focus too much on work, it can be stressful and make it hard to enjoy personal time. At the same time, we can't ignore work completely because it is necessary to earn money and build our careers. There are ups and downs in both work and personal life and sometimes it feels like there is no time for both.
It’s important to understand that both work and personal life are equally important. While it’s okay to work hard for your goals, it’s also necessary to take time for yourself, your family, and your health. If you only focus on work, you might feel stressed and unhappy. But if you only focus on personal happiness, you may struggle financially. Finding a balance between work and personal life is key to living a healthy and happy life. Both should be valued.
