Six men from JJ Colony of Bindapur in Delhi, who were recently released from jail, planned to raise funds for their trip to the hills through a series of robberies in Dwarka. Their plan ended abruptly after they were caught following their first heist.
On the evening of November 12, the gang targeted Mukesh, who owns a grocery shop. He was returning home on his scooter. The victim was stopped near the DDA flats in Bindapur by three motorcycle-borne individuals. The robbers, armed with a gun, forced Mukesh to hand over ₹50,000 at gunpoint.
Mukesh, a grocery shop owner, was returning home on his scooter when he was intercepted near the DDA flats in Bindapur. Three individuals on a motorcycle stopped him and robbed ₹50,000 at gunpoint," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka), Ankit Singh.
The police thereafter toiled in tireless effort, scanning footage of more than 500 CCTV cameras, and tracing the movements of suspects. This led to identifying the gang members. Acting on a tip-off, police on November 17 set up a trap and arrested three accused: Mohammad Sazid, 23, Mohammad Shoeb, 19, and Mohammad Rashid, 22.
During interrogation, the trio confessed to the crime and provided information that led to the arrest of three more suspects: Mohammad Ayan, 19, Mohammad Aftab, 22, and Mohammad Altab, 24. All six men were history sheeters, having been involved in various criminal activities before.
The gang had been struggling financially after release from jail and had long wanted to experience snowfall at a hill station. "All the accused are history sheeters and have been struggling financially. Recently released from jail after serving sentences for various crimes, they planned to experience snowfall at a hill station. But as they were short on funds, they decided to commit robberies," Singh explained.
Other shopkeepers in the locality had also been under threat but had escaped the bandits who got arrested before taking away more of their money. Police recovered ₹35,200 from the plundered money, a motorcycle, and country-made pistol from the perpetrators.
