In an unusual event, a thief broke into the house of a retired teacher in Tamil Nadu. But what's interesting is that the thief left an apology note promising to return the stolen items within a month. This incident took place in Sathankulam Road in Megnanapuram, Thiruchendur district, while the owners of the house were away visiting their son in Chennai.
Chithrai Selvin and his wife, both retired teachers, left for Chennai on June 17. They had arranged for their domestic helper, Selvi, to clean their house periodically during their absence. On June 26, Selvi arrived at the house for her regular cleaning duties, only to find the main door open and some items missing. Shocked, she immediately informed Selvin.
Upon returning, Selvin discovered that Rs 60,000 in cash, 12 grams of gold jewellery, including two pairs of earrings, and a pair of silver anklets were stolen. During the investigation, the police found a handwritten note left by the thief. In the letter, the thief apologised for his actions and promised to return the stolen items within a month. The letter read, "Forgive me. I will return this in a month. I am doing this because someone in my house is not well."
Tamil Nadu Police Launch Thorough Investigation
The Megnanapuram police registered a case and started a thorough investigation into the burglary. This case is similar to the incident occured in Kerala last year. In that case, a thief stole a gold necklace from a three-year-old child but later returned the money earned from selling the necklace along with an apology letter. The thief pleaded for forgiveness and requested not to be arrested, stating family issues as the reason for his crime.
Such incidents of thieves expressing sadness and promising to return stolen items are rare and noteworthy. They highlight the complex situations that sometimes force individuals to commit crimes. The apology letters left by these thieves suggest that, despite their actions, they are aware of the wrongness of their deeds and are seeking some sort of redemption.
In Selvin's case, the police are taking the matter seriously and have made their search even stricter for the burglar. They are also keeping an eye out for any attempt by the thief to return the stolen items as promised in the note.
This incident has left the community in Megnanapuram puzzled and intrigued. While the loss of valuables is significant, the unusual nature of the thief's apology and promise to return the items has given rise to discussions among locals about the reasons behind such behaviour.
The police have urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities if they happen. They have also advised homeowners to take extra precautions when leaving their houses unattended for extended periods.
As the investigation continues, the residents of Megnanapuram are hopeful that the thief will keep his promise and return the stolen items.
