An 18-year-old Indian student studying civil engineering in the UK has been given a suspended prison sentence after he was found guilty of entering a female student’s room without permission and masturbating on her bed and soft toys. The student, named Udkarsh Yadav, studies at Northumbria University in Newcastle. The incident happened when the girl was away for Christmas. Yadav entered her room without her knowing and did the act, which was later discovered. He could now be expelled from the university and sent back to India if his student visa is cancelled.
Using a faulty gym key card that was incorrectly programmed by the university, he entered the girl’s room while she was away for Christmas. When she returned, she discovered a crusty white substance on her bedsheet and soft toys. Yadav admitted to the act and was handed a suspended prison sentence, meaning he won't go to jail unless he breaks the law again within a set period. According to the UK’s Daily Express, the university has told him to shift to different housing.
Now, Yadav risks being expelled from his university and deported back to India if his student visa is cancelled. His future in the UK is uncertain, and he may face further consequences both academically and legally.
What Utkarsh said
When questioned by the police, Yadav initially said nothing. But after DNA evidence confirmed his presence in the room, he admitted he was "overcome with desire" and knew the card gave him access to all rooms. The female student was deeply disturbed when she returned and found a "crusty white substance" on her bed and soft toys. She later told the court she had photos of herself on the wall and felt scared knowing someone had done something so personal and disgusting in her room.
Prosecutor Jennifer Coxon said Yadav confessed only after seeing the DNA evidence. He later admitted to burglary with intent to cause criminal damage. Judge Mark McKone KC strongly condemned Yadav’s actions. He said, "This was a disgusting and selfish thing to do. You must have known how stressful this would be." He also said it was shocking behavior, especially since it was the girl's first time living away from home.
Yadav was given a 14-month prison sentence, but it was suspended for two years. This means he won’t go to jail unless he commits another crime during that time. He must also do 200 hours of unpaid work and pay £117 for the damaged items. His lawyer, Shada Mellor, said Yadav had never been in trouble before and described the act as out of character. She explained that he came to the UK to study and hopes to earn a Master’s degree, but now risks losing his student visa and being sent back to India. The university is reviewing his case after the court's decision.
