Agra woman seeks divorce within 40 days over hubby’s hygiene

A woman residing in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, has filed for divorce from her husband merely 40 days following their marriage, citing his severe neglect of personal hygiene as the main reason for her decision. The woman, whose name remains undisclosed, sought assistance from a family counseling center to convey her distress regarding her husband’s hygiene practices. She alleged that he bathed only once or twice a month, resulting in an intolerable body odor that rendered cohabitation unbearable. The husband, Rajesh, corroborated his wife’s claims during an inquiry by officials, acknowledging that he typically bathes infrequently and resorts to sprinkling Ganga Jal, sacred water from the Ganga River, on himself weekly as a substitute for bathing.

This legal development exacerbated an already strained situation. During conversations with law enforcement officials, Rajesh consented to enhance his hygiene and pledged to bathe daily; nevertheless, this promise did not convince his wife to return to their home.
The couple has been directed to revisit the counseling center for further discussions scheduled for September 22, 2024. The results of these sessions remain uncertain, as the wife has indicated her reluctance to continue the marriage under the present conditions.
