The general state of apathy towards the public in India's government-run hospital is well known. In a recent incident that is quite unthinkable, none other than Central Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya faced this culture of apathy.

He revealed this incident during the inauguration of 4 new health facilities at Safdarjung hospital. He said that he was assaulted by a security guard while on a surprise visit to the same hospital disguised as a commoner. He was trying to sit on a bench when a security guard hit him with a stick and chided him not to sit there.

Speaking at the function, he also said he noticed several patients facing problems in getting stretchers and other medical assistance at the hospital. He gave an example of a 75-year-old woman who was pleading with the guards to get a stretcher for her son but couldn't find one.

In his speech, he questioned the hospital authorities as to why even after 1500 guards being stationed at the hospital, not one came forward to help the women. He reminded the paramedics and other staff of their roles and asked them to work together as one team.

He further revealed that the PM on hearing about this incident was upset and asked whether or not the guard was suspended. He replied to the PM that he did not want to replace just one person but the whole system.
