A Delhi couple has been arrested by the Delhi police for allegedly kidnapping a month-old boy of a disabled woman after their daughter requested them to bring a brother for her so that she can celebrate the Raksha Bandhan festival.

According to a police official, the 17-year-old son of  Sanjay Gupta (41) and Anita Gupta (36) residents of Raghubir Nagar in Tagore Garden, had passed away the previous year.

The Police at Kotwali Police Station received a call on Thursday at about 4:34 a.m. regarding the kidnapping of a one-month-old boy. The complaint was made by a couple who live on a footpath at Chhatta Rail Chowk, alleged that when they woke up around 3 a.m., they discovered that their child was missing and suspected that someone had kidnapped him, a senior police officer said.

During the investigation, police searched CCTV cameras installed in nearby areas and saw two individuals on a bike, with a male rider and a female pillion passenger. The bike took several turns on a particular route. The official said that after a thorough investigation, it was discovered that the bike was registered in Sanjay’s name. They checked around 400 CCTV cameras and traced them up to LNJP Hospital. The officer said.

The area was a cluster and crime-prone. Around 15 police personnel, along with woman staff, equipped with weapons cordoned off the area. They went to C-block in Tagore Garden’s Raghubir Nagar where they found the accused couple and the kidnapped child, Deputy Commissioner of Police (north) Sagar Singh Kalsi said.

Upon interrogation, the accused revealed that their 17-year-old son had passed away the previous year and their 15-year-old daughter was asking for a brother to tie rakhi on the upcoming Raksha Bandhan which led them to abduct a male child.

“They encountered this particular child sleeping at a distance from his mother near Chhatta Rail Chowk. The couple said they kidnapped the child intending to raise him as their son”, said the DCP. He added, “The abducted boy was merely one month old. His mother is physically disabled, lacking the use of both hands and legs, while his father is a rag picker. The family is homeless, residing on a footpath near Chhatta Rail Chowk, without strong ties in society.”

The accused Sanjay is a tattoo artist by profession, and was previously involved in three criminal cases, police said, adding that Anita is a Mehandi artist.
