In a tragic incident last month, a 10-year-old girl lost her life after consuming her birthday cake in Punjab. Health officials on Monday reported that they found a high concentration of artificial sweetener (saccharine) in the samples collected from the bakery.
Manvi the girl from Patiala (Punjab) allegedly passed away after eating the cake. The girl's entire family experienced sickness after consuming the cake.
According to the officials, two of the four cakes collected for sample testing contained a high concentration of saccharine. Saccharine which is used as a substitute for sugar, especially by diabetic patients is often added to drinks and food in small amounts, the high consumption of the sweetener can lead to a spike in blood glucose levels.
An FIR was filed against the bakery owner and reports suggest that strict action will be taken against the bakery and a fine will be imposed on the bakery.
Manvi's grandfather said that the whole family fell ill after consuming the cake, Manvi and her younger sister were in most discomfort as they complained of dry throat. Manvi was rushed to the hospital after a severe illness and was declared dead.
