A Chennai cab driver received a shock of his lifetime after Rs 9000 crores were deposited into his bank account by mistake. The bank soon realised their mistake and took back their money within 30 minutes only. However, the cab driver was able to send Rs 21,000 to a friend.

Rajkumar, the cab driver, a resident of Neikkarapatti village near Palani had rented an apartment in Kodambakkam along with other cab drivers. He said that on the afternoon of September 9th, he was taking a nap after a long day at work and at around 3PM he received a message from Tamilnad Mercantile Bank (his bank) about money being deposited in his account.

Rajkumar said that at first he couldn’t even count the number of zeroes in the amount and assumed that that it must be a prank or some scam by someone but then realised that the message was from the bank’s official number after he scrolled through his message inbox.

Rajkumar who only had upto Rs 105 in his account uptil that point, transferred Rs 21,000 to his friend after which the bank immediately debited the remaining amount from his account a few minutes later. The following morning, the representatives called him and explained that the money had been credited accidentally and asked Rajkumar to not make any more withdrawals.

When one of the bank officials threatened to file a police complaint, he went to the bank’s T Nagar branch with an advocate where both the parties reached a compromise. Rajkumar has said that the bank told him that he does not need to return the money he withdrew and that the bank also offered him a car loan.
