A 37-year-old lady in France was deeply shocked when she discovered she was accidentally 23 weeks pregnant with a baby developing within her gut. According to a case report published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the woman sought medical attention after 10 days of acute stomach discomfort and increasing bloat. A scan confirmed that she was carrying a "normally formed" baby inside her abdominal cavity, which sits between the stomach and the colon.

The physicians revealed in the paper that the lady was having an abdominal ectopic pregnancy, which occurs when a fertilized egg implants outside of the uterus and instead in the abdominal cavity. The condition usually ends in the loss of the foetus; however, physicians in France miraculously delivered the baby at 29 weeks, and the mother and her newborn child were discharged from the hospital three months later.

The doctor's efforts were incredible, especially given the possible threat to the woman, as ectopic pregnancies can cause internal bleeding, tube rupture, or shock. It can also cause fetal death.

According to the New York Post, the infant has a 90% probability of dying in this situation. Those who do survive are one in every five likely to have birth abnormalities or brain impairment.

In this particular case, the mother sought medical assistance in France, where specialists made certain that she waited until she was 29 weeks pregnant to offer the baby the best chance of survival. The professionals then used their abilities to make an incision in the woman's abdomen before placing their parents' baby in neonatal intensive care, resulting in an exceptionally successful birth.

Fetus in the liver?

Meanwhile, this is not the first time physicians have discovered an embryo developing in an unusual location. According to the Post, a doctor previously shared a case report on social media about a fetus developing in a woman's liver. "I thought I had seen it all," Dr. Michael Narvey of the Children's Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba stated in the video. "We see these sometimes in the abdomen but never in the liver. This is a first for me," he stated.
