Google introduces new anti-theft features, making devices harder to steal
For now, these features are available to users residing in the U.S. But gradually the feature will be deployed in various devices, so different devices will get different updates at different times.
Google has introduced three new anti-theft features for your phone if it gets lost or stolen. These three new security features include the Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock, and Remote Lock. It’s important to note that these three anti-theft security features are available only on devices running Android 10 or later.
Theft detection lock
Google has trained an AI algorithm for the Theft Detection Lock. During a theft, this AI feature recognizes signs such as sudden increases in speed. It helps identify when someone snatches the device and attempts to escape on foot or in a vehicle.
Theft Detection utilises on-device AI technology and sensors to quickly detect when the phone has been snatched, triggering the screen lock process immediately.
Offline lock
In offline lock mode, the device automatically locks the screen and requires a passcode or biometric verification to unlock the home screen. This feature activates during a theft when someone tries to disconnect your phone from the internet and remove the SIM card for an extended period. The offline lock makes it impossible for the thief to use the device.
Remote lock
The new Remote Lock offers an extra feature to access the Find My Device app using your registered phone number and a quick security challenge on any device. You can set a security question, such as your pet’s name or your spouse’s name. Once you access Find My Device, you can immediately display a message on the screen lock asking the finder to return the device or issue a factory reset command to wipe it completely.
This feature is particularly useful in situations where you forget your password for the Find My Device application, as you simply need to enter your phone number to regain access.
Who can take advantage of these features?
For now, these features are available to users residing in the U.S. But gradually the feature will be deployed in various devices, so different devices will get different updates at different times. For example, some users have Theft Detection Lock and Offline Device Lock but not Remote Lock, while others, like certain Pixel users, have Remote Lock but not the other two.
Currently, the features are expected to be available on a limited number of devices but will soon be accessible on other models as well. Initially, they were beta-tested in Brazil and are now ready to expand to a broader audience, with more users in the U.S. set to receive them soon.
