Mithun Chakraborty awarded Dadasaheb Phalke award
Mithun Chakraborty honored with Dadasaheb Phalke Award, celebrating his remarkable journey in cinema and his impact as a cultural icon.
Veteran actor and politician Mithun Chakraborty has been named as the recipient of the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest government honor for contributions to Indian cinema. The announcement was made by Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who praised the actor’s “remarkable cinematic journey” that has inspired generations. The 70th National Awards presentation ceremony, where Mithun will be officially honored, is scheduled for October 8, 2024.
Mithun’s son Namashi Chakraborty shared his pride over the honor, he said to the Indian Express: “Feeling extremely proud and honoured. My father is a self-made superstar and a great citizen. His life journey is an inspiration for millions. We are all feeling elated for this magnificent honour.”
PM Narendra Modi also congratulated Mithun on the occasion, stating: “Delighted that Shri Mithun Chakraborty Ji has been conferred the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, recognizing his unparalleled contributions to Indian cinema. He is a cultural icon, admired across generations for his versatile performances. Congratulations and best wishes to him.”
From the silver screen to politics: Journey of Mithun Chakraborty
With a film career of over 350 films more than four languages-Hindi, Bengali, Telugu, and Tamil -Mithun Chakraborty had engraved his mark upon Indian cinema. An actor diversified in playing different roles and a great dancer, Mithun first captured the nation’s imagination when he played the titular role of Mrigayaa by the renowned filmmaker Mrinal Sen in 1976. But it was his role as a dancing sensation in Disco Dancer, 1982 where he became a superstar.
Mithun transitioned smoothly from commercially successful films to critically acclaimed roles throughout his career, going away with three National Awards, including Tahader Katha in 1992 and Swami Vivekananda in 1996. His iconic performances in films like Gudia, Guru, and Oh My God remain the epitome of favorite protagonists for generations of his audiences. Despite his stardom, he continued to represent the common man, earning the affectionate moniker “the people’s hero.”
Beyond cinema, Mithun has also made his mark in the political sphere. He was nominated to the Rajya Sabha in 2014 during his association with the Trinamool Congress. Presntly, he is associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party and continues to connect with the public, entertaining them while doing his bit for the nation.
He extended his versatility further to the small screen, hosting Dance India Dance, Bigg Boss Bangla, and Dadagiri. He became an icon of both Indian cinema and popular culture.
