A bride swap, a dash of satire, and a shot at the academy awards!

Kiran Rao’s film ‘Laapataa Ladies’ has been chosen as India’s official submission for the Oscars 2025. The Film Federation of India (FFI) announced the selection on September 23. The film, released in March, is Rao’s second directorial effort, following her acclaimed debut ‘Dhobi Ghat’ in 2011.

‘Laapataa Ladies’ is a satirical comedy-drama that tells the story of a young man whose bride is accidentally swapped with another. The film features Sparsh Shrivastava, Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Chhaya Kadam, and Ravi Kishan. It is based on Biplab Goswami’s award-winning screenplay, ‘Two Brides’.

In its citation, the FFI jury noted the film’s exploration of the complexities of Indian womanhood. They stated, “Well-defined, powerful characters in one world, ‘Laapataa Ladies’ captures this diversity perfectly.” The jury praised the film for its ability to engage and entertain audiences universally, highlighting its themes of desire, rebellion, and change.

Rao expressed her gratitude for the recognition, stating, “This is a testament to the tireless work of my entire team.” She emphasized the film’s potential to resonate with audiences globally, connecting hearts and igniting conversations.
