FBI exposes new evidence in Trump assassination attempt at Butler Rally

Positioned approximately 130 yards from the stage, the shooter utilized the roof of a nearby building to execute the assault.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has recently disclosed new evidence and photographs of the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump during the Butler Rally held in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, 2024. The assailant, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, discharged eight rounds from an AR-style rifle, resulting in injuries to Trump and two other individuals, as well as the fatality of one attendee. The FBI’s investigation remains active, and a definitive motive for Crooks’ actions has yet to be determined.

In a press conference, Kevin Rojek, the head of the FBI’s Pittsburgh field office, elaborated on Crooks’ planning and actions before the attack. He characterized Crooks as having engaged in “detailed attack planning” and becoming “hyper-focused” on the Trump rally following its announcement. Positioned approximately 130 yards from the stage, the shooter utilized the roof of a nearby building to execute the assault. One bullet grazed Trump’s ear, while two other attendees sustained serious injuries. The shooter was subsequently neutralized by a Secret Service sniper shortly after the gunfire erupted.

The four notable photographs released by the FBI

The Rifle: A photograph depicting Crooks’ AR-style rifle, produced by DPMS Panther Arms, was made public. This firearm was equipped with an adjustable stock and an optical sight, facilitating its concealment. Reports indicate that Crooks disassembled the rifle to fit it into a backpack, which was also retrieved from the scene.

Explosive Devices: Another image revealed two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) located in Crooks’ vehicle. The FBI characterized these devices as “relatively crude” and pointed out that they exhibited construction flaws. Although the devices were fitted with a transmitter for remote activation, the receivers were discovered in the “off” position.

Backpack: The backpack utilized by Crooks to transport the disassembled rifle was also showcased. This backpack played a crucial role in enabling him to move through the rally crowd without being detected.

Access Point: A photograph of the air conditioning unit that Crooks employed to gain access to the roof of the AGR building was included. This detail underscores the premeditated nature of his attack.

The investigation conducted by the FBI has uncovered that Crooks had been examining campaign events for both Trump and Biden for several months leading up to the attack. His online activities included inquiries about explosive devices and content that is antisemitic in nature. Although he is registered as a Republican, Crooks displayed a blend of ideologies, making it challenging to ascertain his true motives. Significantly, he had contributed to a liberal campaign organization, which further complicates the understanding of his political affiliations.

Rojek pointed out that there is currently no evidence to suggest that Crooks collaborated with any other individuals or that a second gunman was present. The investigation is ongoing, focusing on Crooks’ background and any possible links to extremist groups.
