Rescue in Kerala landslide: 42 dead, center provides cash assistance for relatives of victims

Massive landslides that slammed the mountainous regions of Kerala’s Wayanad district on Tuesday (July 30) are believed to have killed at least 42 people, including children, and stranded hundreds more. The NDRF is among the organizations that have joined the rescue efforts in the steep regions close to Meppadi. The ongoing rescue in Kerala landslide operations are critical as they work to reach and assist those affected by this devastating disaster.

At about two in the morning, several areas in Wayanad, Kerala, were devastated by massive landslides. The situation worsened as another landslide struck the district at approximately 4:10 AM, exacerbating the already critical conditions. The impact of these landslides has been severe, with reports indicating that hundreds of people may be trapped under debris.

In response to the escalating crisis, the Indian Air Force has dispatched two helicopters to aid in the rescue mission. Alongside the aerial support, around 200 soldiers have been mobilized to assist in the rescue operations. The army has issued a statement confirming that “hundreds of people are suspected to have been trapped” due to the landslides.

Rescue Operations Amidst Adverse Conditions

The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has swiftly responded by sending rescue personnel and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams to the affected areas. However, the ongoing heavy rainfall is complicating and hindering the rescue operations. The continuous downpour is making it challenging for rescue teams to reach the affected areas and carry out effective operations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reached out to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, offering full support from the central government. In a statement, PM Modi assured that the administration would provide all necessary assistance to manage the aftermath of the disaster. He has also instructed JP Nadda, the head of the BJP, to ensure that party members contribute to the rescue efforts. Furthermore, the Prime Minister has communicated with Union Minister Suresh Gopi, the sole Kerala MP for the BJP, to coordinate relief efforts.

In a social media post on X, PM Modi expressed his distress over the landslides in Wayanad, saying, “Distressed by the landslides in parts of Wayanad. My thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones and prayers with those injured. Rescue ops are currently underway to assist all those affected. Spoke to Kerala CM Shri Pinarayi Vijayan and also assured all possible help from the Centre in the wake of the prevailing situation there.”

Government Assistance and Community Response

In addition to the immediate rescue efforts, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has announced compensation for the victims. Families who have lost loved ones will receive ₹2 lakh each, while those injured will be given ₹50,000. This financial aid aims to provide some relief to the affected families during this challenging time.

Former Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi also expressed his sorrow over the tragedy. In a post on X, he stated, “I am deeply anguished by the massive landslides near Meppadi in Wayanad. My heartfelt condolences go out to the bereaved families who have lost their loved ones. I hope those still trapped are brought to safety soon.” His remarks highlight the widespread concern and solidarity from various quarters regarding the disaster.

The rescue operations continue to face significant obstacles due to the relentless rainfall, which has further aggravated the situation. Efforts are underway to ensure that all those trapped are reached and brought to safety as quickly as possible.
