Delhi man’s Rs 1 tax settlement costs Rs 50,000 in CA fees

Some people expressed shock at the inefficiency of the tax department, while others criticized the high fees charged by the CA.

Apoorv Jain, a resident of Delhi, has sparked an important debate online after revealing that he paid ₹50,000 in CA fees to settle a tax dispute, which ultimately amounted to just Rs 1. Sharing his frustration on the social media platform X, Jain comments, “I paid a Rs 50,000 CA fee to the chartered accountant for an income tax notice I received recently wherein the final disputed value turned out to be Rs 1/-.” He added, “I am not joking.”

This incident emphasizes the complexities and potential expenses of navigating India’s tax system. Jain’s story has received varied reactions online. Some people expressed shock at the inefficiency of the tax department, while others criticized the high fees charged by the CA.

One user commented, “The state of this department is such that nothing looks like a joke anymore.” Another said, “Rs 50000 fees is too much; CA’s are charging anything these days.” Yet another remarked, “Bro, the joke is on you. Better check out the CA who charges 50k for anything.”

Understanding the Need for CA Fees

Despite the skepticism, some users understood Jain’s predicament. One user commented, “If it was Rs 1 from the beginning then you should have simply paid rather than having a CA look at it.” This user added, “I’m assuming it was a large amount since you involved a CA. You must specify what the amount was to begin with.” Jain clarified that the initial notice was for “several lakhs,” indicating the severity of the original issue.

Reflecting on his situation, Jain imagined a better system, stating, “Imagine a polka-dotted world where the system is slightly more robust, the babus slightly less corrupt, the common man slightly less scared, and in this world, I might have been able to save 50000/-”

Broader Issues and CA Fees in India’s Tax Administration

Jain’s experience sheds light on broader issues within India’s tax administration. The Income Tax Department recently warned taxpayers against filing false claims for exemptions and deductions, highlighting severe consequences such as heavy fines and possible imprisonment.

Importance of Verifying Tax Notices

Tax notices can be sent for various reasons, including discrepancies in returns, nondisclosure of high-value transactions, or requests for additional documentation. With an increase in fraudulent notices, taxpayers need to verify the authenticity of any notice through the e-filing portal before responding.
