Centre and State announce Rs 2 lakh each for families of Hathras stampede victims

In a heartbreaking turn of events, the central and Uttar Pradesh state governments have announced Rs 2 lakh each in compensation for the families of the Hathras Stampede victims. This incident leads Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s visit to the victims’ families, highlighting the gravity of the situation.

UP Minister Sandeep Singh broke the news of the compensation on Friday. “The Prime Minister and the state government, both have announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakhs each for the bereaved families, the total is Rs 4 lakhs. The task of transferring this amount to the accounts of the people has already started. The BJP will help these family in any manner required,” he said.

Singh explained that the security at the event was managed by volunteers, who restricted police access. “The volunteers of the Baba took the responsibility of security and they do not allow the police to enter their premises. Police and fire-tenders were present at the venue. They have always been disallowing the police from entering the premises,” he stated.

Rahul Gandhi paid a visit to meet with the grieving families, calling for adequate compensation from the state government. “It is a sad incident. Many lives have been lost. I am not approaching this from a political perspective but addressing the deficiencies of the administration. The main priority should be to provide maximum compensation to the poor families affected by this tragedy. I request CM Yogi Adityanath to provide compensation with an open heart,” Gandhi told the media.

He also highlights the lack of police presence at the event, which exacerbated the chaos. “If there is a delay in providing compensation, it will not help anyone. I spoke with the families, and they told me there was no police arrangement at the venue. They are in shock, and I wanted to understand their situation,” he stated.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visited the tragedy site and announced a judicial probe into the incident. He has set up a three-member Judicial Inquiry Commission, led by Justice (retd) Brijesh Kumar Srivastava, to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation. The commission is expected to deliver its report within two months.

President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have extended their condolences to the grieving families. The Prime Minister assured support to the state government to guarantee that the families receive the announced compensation.
