Police establishes AI based face recognition systems at J&K’s Navyug Tunnel

Revolutionising the security measures in the area, the Jammu and Kashmir Police has established an AI-Based Facial Recognition System at J&K’s Navyug Tunnel Navyug Qazigund.

This system aims to identify and target individuals involved in criminal activities including history sheeters, drug peddlers, absconders, and members with banned organisations, this cutting-edge technology marks a significant advancement in crime detection.

Under the supervision of IGP Kashmir zone VK Birdi-IPS and SSP Kulgam Sahil Sarangal, among other dignitaries, the implementation of this system marks an important role in ensuring public safety and combating crimes effectively.

A police official confirmed, “This Artificial Intelligence based facial recognition system is an integral part of the smart policing initiative. By implementing this advanced technology, the police not only aim to track down criminals more effectively but also contribute to the broader framework of intelligent and proactive policing.”

Introduced on May 03, the AI-Based Facial Recognition System at Navyug Tunnel, Banihal in Ramban, signifies a significant step taken in strengthening security measures. “This strategic initiative aims to revolutionise the policing landscape by leveraging advanced technology for more efficient crime detection and public safety,” said by another police official.

Explaining the system’s functionality, the official mentioned, “After recognizing the accused person, there will be an alarm in the computer, and then the same person can be arrested or detained. Even if the person is wearing a face mask, the system can easily identify them.”

Plans are in progress to replicate these AI-based systems in other parts of the district, was told by the official, who also highlighted the inclusion of photographs of active terrorists into the system to prevent potential major terror incidents in the district.

According to the official, the system provides comprehensive background details of crimes and other relevant information that aligns with the broader vision of smart policing. “By harnessing this advanced technology, law enforcement agencies aim not only to track down criminals more effectively but also to contribute to the broader framework of intelligent and proactive policing,” concluded the police officer.

Earlier in December 2023, the police introduced the first innovative AI-Based Facial Recognition System in Kishtwar at Morden Naka Drabshalla of the district.
