2 dead, 21 injured in knife attack at South China hospital

Video footage from The Paper depicted numerous police vehicles and at least twelve police officers stationed outside the hospital

A tragic incident occurred at Zhenxiong People’s Hospital in Yunnan province, China, where a knife attack at South China hospital resulted in the deaths of at least two individuals and left 21 others injured. The attack took place at 11:37 local time, causing shock and distress among the hospital staff and the local community.

It remains unclear if law enforcement has apprehended the suspect, as reported by the South China Morning Post based in Hong Kong. Initially, the official media did not specify the  detail the attack’s nature. However, footage from CCTV cameras shared on social media reveals an individual brandishing a knife within the hospital’s premises.

Earlier reports from state media indicated that 23 individuals had sustained injuries, but officials have since revised this number downward. The state-run news site, The Paper, released images showing a man wielding a knife at another individual holding a stick in the hospital lobby, along with police officers responding to the incident.

The police in it’s statement said  “At present, the injured are receiving treatment in the hospital. Investigations are ongoing.” A local resident said “The situation is still quite chaotic, they’re still determining the numbers. The police are working on it.”

According to another witness who spoke to Red Star News, an online publication, he narrowly avoided the attack and mentioned that doctors were among those injured. The witness’s video footage depicted individuals bleeding and collapsing on the ground, with an older person seen assisting another.

Additionally, Chinese news outlet Hongxing News reported that authorities instructed residents and local businesses in the area to secure their doors and avoid interactions with unfamiliar individuals.

Although firearms are prohibited in China, the nation has experienced a series of knife attack at South China in recent times. For instance, in August of the previous year, a mentally ill individual launched a knife attack at South China in a residential area in Yunnan, resulting in two deaths and seven injuries. Similarly, in July of that same year, six individuals, including three children, lost their lives in a stabbing incident at a kindergarten in Guangdong, a province in southeastern China.
