DRDO launches lightest bulletproof jacket

The recently created jacket is intended to fend off threats classified as Level 6 ballistics, such as the potent 7.62 x 54 R API round

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has created India’s lightest bulletproof jacket, which is capable of fighting off even the most dangerous ballistic attacks, in a stunning display of homegrown creativity. Indian defense personnel’s safety and agility stand to be greatly improved by this advancement in personal armor technology.

The recently created jacket is intended to fend off threats classified as Level 6 ballistics, such as the potent 7.62 x 54 R API round. As of right now, this level of protection for body armor is the greatest, guaranteeing that troops fighting on the front lines will be adequately shielded from heavy weapon fire.

The Front Hard Armour Panel (HAP) of the jacket is its most notable feature; it can resist several strikes, even sniper bullets. This has been made possible by the employment of polymer backing and monolithic ceramic material, a design that offers the highest level of protection while also guaranteeing wearability and comfort over prolonged operations.

The weight of this jacket is one of its most important features. The ICW Hard Armour Panel (HAP) and standalone HAP’s surface densities have been kept below 40 kg/m2 and 43 kg/m2 , respectively, by the DRDO, making it the lightest jacket providing this degree of protection.

The bulletproof jacket has passed all BIS 17051-2018 criteria after undergoing extensive testing at TBRL, Chandigarh. Its ability to withstand several hits from 7.62 x 54 R API ammo attests to its dependability and effectiveness. This advancement demonstrates India’s dedication to being self-sufficient in defense technologies.

The DRDO’s accomplishment in producing such cutting-edge personal protective equipment not only meets the armed services’ urgent needs but also establishes India as a pioneer in the development of defense technology. The world’s lightest bulletproof jacket is a major achievement as India keeps pushing the envelope in defense technology research and development.

The bulletproof jacket meets or exceeds international standards. Along with the US, UK, and Germany, India is one of the few nations that has a national standard for bulletproof jackets that complies with international requirements. The Indian standard, IS 17051:2018, specifies the minimal performance standards for bulletproof jackets, guaranteeing defense against ammunition and small guns used by law enforcement and the armed services. Furthermore, the fact that India has started exporting these bulletproof jackets to more than 100 nations, including those in Europe, shows how well-known and respected the quality and standards are throughout the world.
